FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -
Northern Arizona authorities are looking for a camper who fired a shot into the air, prompting Flagstaff police to issue a warning for nearby residents to stay in their homes.
Police were tipped off to Monday afternoon's incident by a caller who had confronted the man in the area of McMillan Mesa. The caller said the man, who appeared to be a transient, was setting up camp near a construction site for a new church, according to police.
At some point, the camper retrieved a rifle and fired a shot into the air.
The caller at that point fled the area and called police.
The camper is described as an older man, between 5'10"-5'11" tall. He has white and gray shoulder-length hair and was last seen wearing a blue shirt with dark pants. The suspect was seen carrying the rifle in a tan case and a back backpack.
The Flagstaff Police Department deployed the Northern Arizona Tactical Operations Team and the Arizona Department of Public Safety's helicopter to assist with a search for the suspect.
The police department sent an instant message to about 3,000 residents in the immediate area alerting them of the potential danger and stay remain inside their homes.
People with any information about the incident or the camper's whereabouts are asked to call the Flagstaff Police Department.
