Guide lacked permits for Grand Canyon tours

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, AZ (AP) -

A northern Arizona man temporarily has been banned from Grand Canyon National Park after being cited for providing commercial guide services without a permit.

Brian Thompson pleaded guilty in U.S. Magistrate Court earlier this month to engaging in business without a permit. He won't be allowed to enter Grand Canyon during his year of probation and cannot give tours or act as a guide in any other national park or forest.

A Grand Canyon ranger acting as a tourist interested in Thompson's guide services for a backpacking trip arrested him in late August after verifying that he lacked the necessary permit.

The arrest resulted from routine monitoring of backcountry use and permits in the park.
