GLADSTONE, MO (KCTV) -
An investigation is under way in Gladstone Wednesday morning after a longtime AT&T worker was assaulted and later died.
Police responded to the 2700 block of Northeast 57th Terrace in Gladstone about 3:30 a.m. on a report of an assault. Upon arrival, police found the worker in his AT&T vehicle. Kevin M. Mashburn, 58, was transported to an area hospital where he later died.
Mashburn's family described him as a kind man who freely helped others.
AT&T officials said Mashburn had been with the company for more than 40 years. He apparently was working on a call when he was attacked.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Kevin Mashburn, a dedicated AT&T employee for more than 40 years. Kevin will be greatly missed by all of us at AT&T. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and co-workers at this time of great loss. AT&T is fully cooperating with authorities in their investigation," AT&T said in a statement.
KCTV5's Nima Shaffe said Wednesday morning that a heavy police presence surrounded the long, narrow crime scene. He estimated the scene was 300 to 400 feet long.
Tree branches littered the scene, which included the AT&T vehicle. Police focused their investigation on the truck. The driver's side window was smashed out.
The crime appears to have begun in the Kendallwood Apartments parking lot, which is about a block north of where the vehicle wound up.
Mashburn was working his normal midnight to 8 a.m. shift when he was attacked. He apparently tried to flee the scene before he collapsed.
Some people who live in the area described hearing Mashburn honking his horn and flashing his lights all in an effort to draw attention to his plight. The events have traumatized residents.
Mashburn's death is Gladstone's fifth homicide this year. Just one remains unsolved, and now Mashburn's.
Detectives from across the area are working to solve the crime.
"Everybody in the neighborhood wants answers," Scott Keefer said. "I'm sure his family wants answers a lot more than we do."
