CORDES LAKES, AZ (CBS5) -
Two 17-old-year boys were arrested Sunday night on suspicion of robbing at gunpoint two London tourists who were sleeping in their rental car in Arizona, authorities said.
The victims, who had arrived at Sky Harbor Airport from London a few hours earlier, said they were worn out from their trip and decided to pull into a Chevron Station off Interstate-17 to rest, Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies said.
When the two teens approached them, the victims said they thought the boys were security guards, according to YCSO. One of the boys pulled out a gun and ordered the pair to leave their vehicle, investigators said.
Deputies said the suspects made sure to steal a GPS unit, $1,000 in cash, cell phones and their rental car. The tourists begged the suspects to give them back their passports and the boys complied. The suspects fled in the rental vehicle, drove toward I-17 and disappeared, sheriff's deputies said.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer spotted the stolen vehicle traveling at speeds of more than 100 mph in Phoenix just before midnight. The officer chased the vehicle and eventually got it to stop in the 8700 block of N. 30th Ave.
Both suspects fled. One was caught immediately and the second suspect was caught a short time later, thanks to a Phoenix Police Department air unit.
Deputies recovered the victim's property, including cash. The suspects had already split the stolen cash and each was carrying $500, deputies said. Both were booked at the Prescott Juvenile Detention Center on charges including robbery, theft of a vehicle and theft.
