Victim's vehicle after it came to rest
CASA GRANDE, AZ (CBS5) -
A teen enrolled in the Casa Grande Police Department's Youth Explorer Program was killed in a two-car crash Friday night.
Albert Arias, 17, died the following day, according to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
Arias was a three-year member of Youth Explorer post #2920, and was preparing for a career in law enforcement.
A pickup truck driven by Felipe Urias, 27, of Toltec, was heading eastbound along W. Peters Road and went through a posted stop sign at the intersection of Chuichu Road.
His vehicle collided with a Ford Bronco driven by Arias, who was heading northbound, PCSO said. Arias's SUV then slammed into a utility pole.
Authorities said "speed and inattention" are likely contributing factors in the collision. Additional charges are possible pending a full investigation.
Urias was arrested and cited by a PCSO patrol deputy on Feb. 22 for criminal speed after he was found to be traveling 85 mph in a posted 50 mph zone, sheriff's officials said.
