BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -
Two students in Buckeye are being tested for MRSA after they were potentially exposed by a high school student wrestler who has the infection.
Agua Fira School District Superintendent Dr. Dennis Runyan said the district learned of the possible exposure on Thursday. Runyan said they are sending a letter home with parents on Friday.
According to the letter from Athletic Director Phillip Nowlin, the student at Verrado High School who has MRSA had access to the PE facilities, boy's locker room, weight room and wrestling room. Nowlin said these areas were disinfected Thursday.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a skin condition that most commonly looks like an infected pimple, boil or spider bite and can worsen to include redness, warmth, swelling, pain, and discharge.
MRSA is spread by skin-to-skin contact, contact with drainage from the nose or a person infected, or contact with contaminated objects such as razors, soap, clothing, or towels.
CBS 5 News has learned that a football player also has MRSA but has been taking antibiotics. He never told the school until someone contacted the school and notified them.
