MCSO deputy shoots, kills burglary suspect in Guadalupe

Authorities said a burglary suspect, who was shot by a Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy, has died from his injuries.

MCSO spokesman Officer Christopher Hegstrom said 19-year-old Joel Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital Thursday afternoon.

MCSO said the deputy arrived at the scene near Guadalupe and Hardy about 9:45 a.m. Thursday after Tempe police officers asked for backup.

Sheriff's officials said the suspect had a knife and threatened the deputy before being shot.
