PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

Peoria police had to back out of an apartment where they were serving a search warrant after they came across two pipe bombs.

Jay Davies of the Peoria Police Department said the Glendale bomb squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called in to remove the devices from the apartment at 88th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

"The first thing they did was evacuate the immediate area. They evacuated about 15 residents from apartments for a precaution. Next they contacted the Glendale bomb squad to come deal with the devices. And ATF was also called out to the scene," said Davies.

Peoria police found very small amounts of heroine and marijuana. They also found about $850 dollars in cash.

"It's concerning to know that that sort of violence is present with really that small about of drugs. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident, none of our personnel or anybody that lived there in the apartment. The bombs themselves are believed to be active and actual devices. We're just glad we got those out without incident," said Davies.

Peoria police continued with the search warrant and arrested Steven May, 19, and Alyssa Smith, 21, and seized heroin and cash, Davies said.

Both were charged with several counts of possession with intent to sell. Davies said they could face more charges, pending the outcome of the ATF investigation.
