The driver of this Honda is believed to have suffered from a medical condition that contributed to a high-speed chase with DPS officers Tuesday.
A man believed to have suffered from a medical condition led Department of Public Safety officers on a dangerous chase that reached as fast as 100 mph on Phoenix highways Tuesday night.
Officer Jake Pruet said the man was driving a Honda sedan and struck a Phoenix Fire Department truck on westbound Interstate 10 at the Deck Park Tunnel and continued on.
The driver was finally located by DPS officers on northbound Interstate 17 where he was seen tailgating dangerously close to some vehicles and weaving erratically. Pruet said the man was traveling about 20 to 35 mph, but reached speeds of more than 100 mph on I-17.
Police used spiked strips to deflate a rear tire on the car, and it gradually pulled over and came to a stop on State Route 101 near 43rd Avenue.
Pruet said the man was disoriented and was taken into custody. The man later confirmed he was diabetic, and a check of his blood sugar showed it was extremely low, possibly causing diabetic shock, Pruett said.
He said no drugs or alcohol were involved and said that it would be up to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office as to what charges might be filed in light of the medical condition. Pruet said the crimes that were committed were hit-and-run, felony flight and failure to yield.
