SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 91-year-old Scottsdale man was hospitalized after he was stung more than 50 times by an angry swarm of bees Tuesday morning.

The man escaped the bees by climbing into his vehicle and calling 911. A Scottsdale Fire Department spokesman said he was treated by firefighters and in moderate distress. He was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare-Osborn hospital for treatment. His condition was unknown.

Firefighters said there were multiple hives underneath a second-story balcony adjacent to the entry way of the man's residence at 6900 E. Exeter Blvd. in Scottsdale. Firefighters used foam to knock down the majority of the hives, the spokesman said.

It was not known what sparked the bee attack, the spokesman said.
