Another round of thunderstorms on the way

Posted: Updated:

It was a wet start to the day and more rain is on the way for the Valley. Quick-moving bands of rain have been sliding through mainly the East Valley this morning, although pockets of rain have been falling throughout the entire Phoenix area.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the southern portion of the state for most of today. There is also a flash flood watch across Northwest Arizona.

By midday there will be a break in the rain but more rain and thunderstorms will redevelop this evening.  These storms could last into the overnight hours.

Along with the monsoon moisture, another weather disturbance is bringing more moisture into the state.

Totals could be anywhere from 1/4 inch to 2 to 3 inches in places by the time these storms pass late tonight or early tomorrow morning.

So far, in the last 24 hours, Buckeye has received .11 inches of rain, Mesa has received .16 inches and Phoenix at Sky Harbor has received .06 inches.

The Valley has received more than double the amount of rainfall compared to what is normal during the month of September.

The rain and cloud cover is keeping temperatures in the 70s for the most part this morning. Many areas in the Phoenix area will only be warming up into the upper 80s.

Drier air will start to move in Wednesday. There will still be a possibility of showers but chances are slim. A mix of clouds and sunshine will give way to mainly sunny skies by Thursday.

Temperatures will warm up a few degrees each day. By this weekend highs will be in the low triple digits, likely still below average.
