Feds: 3 arrested in AZ drug smuggling attempt

NOGALES, AZ (CBS5) -

Three people were arrested by Customs and Border Protection officers in separate smuggling attempts at the Dennis DeConcini Port over the weekend. 

Officers arrested Francisco Javier Silva Enriquez, 50, of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, on Sunday after a narcotics detection K-9 discovered and officers removed almost 12 pounds of cocaine and more than seven pounds of methamphetamine. The drugs were found in the rocker panels of the vehicle, officers said. The drugs are valued at roughly $221,000. 

On Friday, Fernanda Lizeth Woo, 19, of Nogales, AZ, was nabbed after she attempted to enter the U.S. through a pedestrian lane with more than a pound of methamphetamine hidden in her clothing, officers said. The drugs have an estimated value exceeding $18,000. 

Jesus Antonio Maldonado Peiro, 20, of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico was also arrested on Friday after he tried to enter the U.S. through a pedestrian lane with $18,000 worth of methamphetamine hidden in his clothing, officers said. 

The vehicle and drugs were seized in all three cases. Each person was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
