A Peoria man was shot and killed by Maricopa County sheriff's deputies after he opened fire on them Sunday night.

A Peoria man was shot and killed after he began firing at Maricopa County sheriff's deputies Sunday night.
The man's wife reported just before 8 p.m. that he had tried to choke her and that he had been drinking and weapons were in the home, according to Christopher Hegstrom of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies heard a gunshot as they arrived at the home near 25000 N. 113th Ave. and began negotiating with the man, Hegstrom said, who added the suspect was carrying a weapon and making threats.
The sheriff's SWAT unit arrived and continued the negotiations for surrender.
But just after 10 p.m., the man came out of his house opened fire with an assault weapon, Hegstrom said. Deputies returned fire and killed the man.
No other information was immediately available.
