Cleanup under way after monsoon storms flood 7 homes

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Cleanup efforts have been non-stop this weekend for many people in the east Valley.  One community near Recker and Main Street in Mesa was inundated with floodwater during Friday's monsoon downpour.

Seven homes flooded. Neighbors said the water had nowhere to go.

"There isn't enough drainage here. Even in a regular rainstorm this whole thing fills up," said CJ Zollars.

Zollars and her house mate Sheila Carlson had spent weeks remodeling their new home.  They put in a new floor and a fresh coat of paint on the walls. But now their move-in date has been pushed back.  Instead of having a couple finishing touches to do, they are starting from scratch.

"I'm not sure what we're going to do at this point," said Zollars.

The women came over Friday afternoon. As soon as they pulled into the subdivision and saw all the mud, they knew something wasn't right.

"We walked in and we were both devastated.  There was three inches of water in our house," said Zollars.

Neighbors said at the height of the storm the water was two feet deep.  It was so powerful it took out a block wall that borders a drainage pond.

All that rushing water left behind a lot of headaches and heartache for the people left to clean it up.

Zollars and Carlson do not have flood insurance. For now, all they can do is wait for the verdict from the adjuster. They hope what happened next door at their neighbor's home isn't an indicator of what's to come.

"They've had to gut everything in the house.  The walls have had to e cut half way up. Insulation had to be pulled out. Cabinets have had to be pulled out," said Zollars.

People who live in the neighborhood told CBS 5 that the drainage problem needs to be addressed. They hope the HOA and city will be able to work together and come up with some kind of fix so this doesn't happen again.
