PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The mother of Jhessye Shockley has been indicted and arrested for her murder.

Jerice Hunter was in court overnight and is being held on a $500,000 cash bond.

Jhessye was first reported missing in October. Hunter called police.

Detectives said she beat and starved her daughter. They believe Hunter locked the 5-year-old in the closet where she died and then disposed of her body.

Search teams spent months sifting through tons of trash at a landfill south of the Valley, trying to recover Jhessye's remains. When no evidence surfaced, they called off their efforts in June.
