MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A Mesa police officer deployed his stun gun on a porch sleeper who awoke and became aggressive early Wednesday morning, police said.
Irvin Tsosie was booked into Mesa City Jail on a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer.
Police were called to check on the welfare of man sleeping on the front porch of a home shortly after 3:30 a.m.
The officer attempted to wake up Tsosie up by poking him with his baton from the other side of a short decorative wall, police said. The officer said the man was "very intoxicated."
When the man awoke, he started cursing at the officer, according to the police report.
Police said Tsosie approached the officer three times in an aggressive manner. Each time the officer struck Tsosie in the left leg with his baton, then backed up. After the third advance, the officer told Tsosie a stun gun would be used if he advanced again.
Tsosie ignored the order and the officer fired his stun gun, police said.
