SWAT situationSAN TAN VALLEY, AZ (CBS5) -
SWAT officers forced their way into a San Tan Valley home on Tuesday and arrested a man in an hours-long standoff.
The suspect, Mark Matheny, 29, of Mesa, was found on the second floor of the home attempting to hang himself with a telephone cord, according to Maricopa County Sheriff's Spokesman Brandon Jones.
Matheny is suspected of trying to beat and stab his ex-wife to death Thursday. Jones said in that incident, Matheny was armed with brass knuckles and a Marine knife with a 6-inch blade.
Sheriff's detectives said their search for the suspect led them to the San Tan Valley home where the suspect they were looking had barricade himself inside.
Skyline Ranch Elementary was placed on lockdown during the barricade situation.
MCSO deputies and Pinal County Sheriff's Office SWAT officers pulled residents out of the home, including a 4-year-old girl.
