PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A New York congressman plans to call for congressional hearings Tuesday morning regarding the use of body scanners at airports.

The congressman says the machines post health risks for pregnant women and children.

ASU professor Peter Rez has been investigating the machines since about 2007 when they started popping up at airports across the country.

Rez believes the machines could pose a danger if they malfunction and stay put on a certain point of the body emitting radiation.

"There is no point to them because they are not really detecting explosives unless they are in a nice package with sharp edges," Rez said.
