Hartford toddler falls from roof while babysitter sleeps

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A 2-year-old boy is recovering at the hospital after falling from a third-story roof in Hartford on Monday night.

Police said the boy was being watched by a babysitter at his Mahl Avenue home when the incident occurred.

According to police, the babysitter, 25-year-old Chantel Turner, fell asleep while watching the boy. The child was able to open up a window in the home around 5:30 p.m. and walk out onto a 25-foot-high roof where he fell from.

According to court documents, the window had been left open because Turner was drying clothes outside of it.

Turner would later admit to police that she had fallen into a deep sleep after being "up all night partying" where she consumed marijuana.

Police said a Good Samaritan in the area found the child after the fall wandering around suffering from head injures. The citizen attempted to locate his family, but when he was not able to, took the boy to a nearby store where emergency services were called.

The boy was taken to a local hospital, police said, where he is being treated for a skull fracture and cranial bleeding. As of Tuesday evening, the child is expected to survive, police said.

Turner was arrested by Hartford police and charged with risk of injury to a minor. On Tuesday, she was arraigned in Hartford Superior Court where she was given a $100,000 bond.

The judge informed Turner, who has no criminal record, that she would only be able to see her two children during supervised visits with DCF workers.
