PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio showed his typical stoicism as he reacted to the news that a federal investigation into his office was officially over.
"If there were any serious charges here there would have been indictments, you know that," said Arpaio, who was on a plane heading back from the Republican National Convention when the news broke.
The investigation into Arpaio's office started in 2010. The allegations ranged from misusing county credit cards to retaliating against political enemies and diverting county funds to pet projects.
"My people are not crooks," he said. "They're trying to do their job. They have done their job. Same criteria exist for the federal government as evidenced by this."
As this investigation comes to an end, the sheriff's office is still facing accusations of racial profiling and several pending lawsuits.
"I'm certainly not dancing in the streets or going and getting a beer," Arpaio said.
