Two Phoenix Union High School District, teachers were honored at the White House as "Champions of Change."

The "Champions of Change" program honors individuals, businesses, or organizations that are helping to improve their community by out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building the rest of the world.

Maryvale English teacher Selina Alonzo and South Mountain Spanish teacher Guadalupe Meza will both be honored at the white house Friday, Aug. 31 when they receive the Commitment of Excellence Award from President Barack Obama's Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

Alonzo and Meza are part of 10 educators picked to be honored because of their example they set in educating and strengthening the nation by teaching Latino students.

Alonzo and Meza were both nominated for the award by Phoenix Union Superintendent Kent Paredes Scribner, who is a member of the President's Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

In addition to the award Alonzo and Meza participated in a panel discussion about their work with the Department of Education and White House officials, plus take a tour of the White House.
