MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A driver fell asleep while driving causing a five-car, chain-reaction collision.
The Mesa Police Department was sent to a car accident on Lindsay Road and McKellips Road in Mesa on Wednesday morning.
When officers arrived they found that five cars were involved in a chain-reaction accident. The chain reaction was started after a 78-year-old man driving a Toyota Sienna minivan fell asleep behind the wheel. Mesa Police said neither speed nor impairment were a factor.
The 78-year-old man and his female passenger, 75, were both taken to Banner Baywood Hospital with minor injuries.
A driver had to be extracted from his Ford Taurus and was taken to Scottsdale Osborne Hospital with a injuries to his right arm and possible head injuries. A third driver was also taken to Scottsdale Osborne Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Mesa Police said criminal charges at this point do not appear likely.
