PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An afternoon of frolicking in a Phoenix motel swimming pool took a tragic turn Saturday.

A family lost track of their 4-year-old boy, whose body was later found in the deep end of that pool.

The little boy was found by a teenager, who spotted him in the deep section of the pool at about 4 p.m. at the E-Z 8 Motel at 1820 S. Seventh St.

Fire rescue officials said the teen jumped in and performed CPR on the boy, but it wasn't enough to save him.

It was a case of miscommunication about who was supposed to be watching whom, according to Phoenix Fire Department officials.

Police had made contact with the parents before.

"They were not very much help when we first got here," said Capt. Larry Nunez of the Phoenix Fire Department. "It was hard to get initial information about where the child was if he was at the bottom or top of pool. It was very difficult for first arriving units on scene."

The child was taken to a local hospital where he died. It is unknown how long he had been under water.

The boy's name has not yet been released.
