FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

Flagstaff police said they've launched an internal investigation after an officer hit a loose dog and the officer's supervisor had the dog euthanized.

Flagstaff police said on Aug. 19 employees told police administration that a dog had been euthanized by a supervisor after it was hit by one of the department's swing shift officers responding to a call.

Flagstaff police said they don't believe the driver violated any departmental policy.

The officer's supervisor was called to the scene and determined the dog needed to be euthanized.

Flagstaff police said employees were concerned with the way the dog was euthanized and the police chief and command staff began an internal investigation.

The supervisors has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office is investigating if there were criminal violations.

No other details were released at this time.
