SURPRISE, AZ (CBS5) -
A man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a cross guard in Surprise.
Police said Timothy Francisco, 59, of Surprise, was driving on West Point Parkway at Tara on Thursday when two school crossing guards were putting school crossing signs in the roadway. The victim said she saw Francisco stop after she put her sign out so the other employee could cross. The victim said after the employee crossed, Francisco started driving and she tapped his window so he would stop again, according to the police report.
The victim said Francisco got out of his vehicle near West Point Academy and punched her in the face, causing her to black out and fall to the pavement.
Francisco left the scene and later went to the police department, according to the report, where he told officers the woman hit his window and yelled at him and then he slapped her.
Police said the victim has a broken jaw, numerous cuts and abrasions.
"She was laying on the floor and some people were helping her out," said concerned parent Eddie Auhasz.
He said he saw the aftermath of what happened Thursday afternoon.
"It's kind of scary, I mean, when somebody can do something like that," he said.
"Someone's who's doing their job to watch out for children tells someone to slow down and that person does what they do to that person?" asked concerned parent Anthony Palmer.
"It's an important service because we have many students in our school districts and students across the nation that walk to and from school," said Jim Dean with the Dysart Unified School District.
He said he understands people are concerned after something like this.
"We are following up with all of our other crossing guards at our other schools as well," Dean said.
He hopes no one else crosses that line.
"You should control yourself," Auhasz said.
Francisco turned himself into police Thursday and is charged with one count of aggravated assault and temporary disfigurement.
