PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said his invitation to comedian George Lopez to bring his stand-up act critical of MCSO's immigration enforcement to Phoenix has gone unanswered.
Lopez went on an Arpaio tirade during the debut of his solo stand-up special, George: It's Not Me, It's You, on HBO on July 14. During the special, Lopez directed profanities at Arpaio.
Afterwards, Arpaio invited Lopez to perform the routine in the Valley in the name of Arpaio's favorite charity - abused animals.
"You would certainly be perceived as a hero by the residents of Maricopa County if you could put your personal feelings about me aside and do this for the animals," Arpaio said in an Aug. 9 letter to the comedian.
Arpaio's annual Pink Collar Comedy Night is being held at Stand Up Live in downtown Phoenix on Oct. 17. The event raises money to care for the animals living at his jail in a program called Maricopa County Animal Safe Haven.
The sheriff wrote to Lopez, "I am even willing to stand on stage with you and take very bad thing you may want to say to me in person in the spirit of raising money for a worthy cause."
Arpaio said he's still waiting for Lopez to respond.
