PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix police officer on patrol foiled a home burglary Wednesday afternoon.

Officer Barney Neil was in the area of 31st Avenue and Campbell about 12:45 p.m. when he saw two men on bicycles ride up to a home and knock on the front door, police said.

When no one answered, the men went around to the backyard and jumped over the fence, Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

When Neil saw one of the men pry open a window with a crowbar and enter the house, he called for more officers and set up a perimeter, Thompson said.

The suspects, identified as Gabriel Toledo, 19, and Derek Yulwel, 24, were taken into custody without any trouble and were booked into jail on charges of burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Both suspects were on probation at the time, one of them for burglary.

"It was a little bit of instinct and common knowledge of what burglars do," Neil said. "I was lucky. I had another squad working nearby."
