MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ (CBS5) -
Heavy rains in Maricopa that caused a sewage system backup has the mayor declaring a state of emergency.
Maricopa police said between 7 p.m. Tuesday and 12 a.m., the city of Maricopa had about 1 1/2 inches of rain and with rain expected Wednesday night, Mayor Christian Price declared the state of emergency on Wednesday.
Police said water from the Sacaton Mountains that travels through the Casa Blanca drainage channel caused the Tortosa Northwest area of Dalli lane and Madrid to flood.
Police said four homes in the area were impacted and the flooding also caused a backup of the sewage system. Global Water is going to door to door checking houses for any problems.
The American Red Cross said anyone needing shelter can go to Maricopa Wells Middle School at 45725 W. Honeycutt Ave.
Pinal County Public Works road crews were busy Wednesday monitoring roads in District 1 and 3 following a series of monsoon storms in several areas Tuesday night and issued the following road closures as of 9 a.m. Wednesday:
Maricopa Area
- Val Vista Road from Warren to Deer Trail-Vekol - wash running
- Ralston Road from Papago Road to Peters and Nall Road - Vekol wash running
- Farrell Road from Carlyle Road to Ralston Road-Vekol - wash running
San Manuel Area
- River Road from Tom Rhodes Ranch Road to Redington Road - San Pedro River running
Mammoth Area
- Copper Creek Road from Bluebird Street to River Road - San Pedro River running
Casa Grande Area
- Selma Highway from ChuChu Road to Trekell Road - underwater
- Storey Road from Tweedy Road to Curry Road - washed out
- Kleck Road from Signal Peak Road to Tweedy Road - underwater
- Peters Road from Trekell Road to Thornton Road - underwater
Stanfield Area
- Russell Road from Peters Road to Interstate 8 - washed out
Prescott Valley police said they have helped numerous vehicles getting stuck in muddy conditions on Old Black Canyon Highway. Prescott Valley had the following road closures as of late Wednesday afternoon:
- Primitive road portions of Old Black Canyon Highway are closed between Stoneridge and the Prescott Country Club.
The city of Maricopa issued the following road closures Wednesday morning due to heavy rains:
- Porter Road is closed from Iron Point Road (Santa Rosa Springs) to Farrell Road.
- Rancho El Dorado Parkway South Wash crossing is closed.
- Farrell Road is closed from White and Parker Road to Hartman Road.
- Hartman Road is closed from Farrell Road to Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.
