Fire official: It's a mystery how woman caught fire

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 40-year-old woman suffered burns over as much as 80 percent of her body after she caught fire outside her house Monday night.

The woman was in a medically-induced coma at the burn unit of Maricopa Medical Center, according to Jonathan Jacobs of the Phoenix Fire Department.

Police said a gasoline can was found on the property near 18th Street and Broadway but investigators were unsure whether she was set on fire by someone else, if she set herself on fire or if it was an accident.

Jacobs said neighbors heard the woman screaming around 8 p.m. and she was found rolling on the ground, catching some grass on fire in the process. The fire was out when officers arrived.

Nothing inside or adjacent to the house at 1800 E. Illini St. was burned, Jacobs said.

She suffered second-degree burns, Jacobs said.
