FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A man who has been perched in a tall pine tree to protest a pipeline being built at the Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff has surrendered.

James Kennedy of Flagstaff said he made an emergency descent from the tree early Thursday as lightning was striking all around him.

Flagstaff police planned to arrest the 26-year-old but Kennedy said no officers were around when he came down.

Earlier this week, Alexander Iwasa, 32, of Flagstaff and Erik Fettig, 20, of Massachusetts locked themselves to ground-breaking equipment near the Lowell Observatory and were later arrested.

The protesters are trying to block construction of a pipeline that will make snow from reclaimed wastewater at the Snowbowl.

The group reportedly is against the near-completion of a 14-mile sewage pipeline, claiming it'll be hazardous and contain antibiotic resistant genes.
