Police use sunglasses to catch suspected crook

PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

Joseph Henderson, 34, was arrested in Peoria after police said he robbed a Chase Bank near 91st Avenue and Northern Avenue on Aug. 2. They said they caught him with just one fingerprint on a pair of sunglasses.

"One single fingerprint on those glasses. I don't know when he touched those glasses but at some point he did and left a fingerprint on them and just that one little print, that's all it took," said spokeswoman Amanda Jacinto.

It sounds like something straight out of CSI - Peoria police find one print and 24 hours later catch the suspected criminal.

"It is kind of the perfect mix of everything," Jacinto said.

CBS 5 News wanted to see how it's done.

"We're using what's pretty much super glue and imagine vaporizing that so it floats around and sticks to the print," Jacinto explained.

Workers took a set of our reporter's prints off of a soda bottle.

"Like what you're used to seeing, that black powder," Jacinto said.

From there they used clear tape to make sure the print was perfectly preserved on a piece of paper.

"And then we're able to pick up that print and run it through the database," Jacinto said.

Investigators can thank the detective on scene for making that possible. They said when it's really hot outside prints tend to disappear faster. If the sunglasses had been left in the sun much longer they might not have had any prints at all.

Police said Henderson admitted to robbing the bank. They found the stolen money at his home.
