MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

A backyard fence caught fire Monday night sending an 11-year-old boy to the emergency room with possible second and third degree burns to his hands and legs.

The fence fire broke out behind a four plex building at 54 E. Ingram on Monday evening.

An 11-year-old boy was near the fence that was on fire when a spray can exploded causing the fire to flash onto him.

In addition to his possible second and third degree burns, the fire may have caused first degree burns on his neck and face.

The boy was transported to Maricopa Medical Center alive.

The fire was contained to the fence and never spread to the homes near-by.
