PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The man charged in the murder of a Phoenix College football coach will be arraigned in court today.

Justin McMahan is charged with first-degree murder, attempted kidnapping, attempted armed robbery and burglary in connection with the death of Thomas Land Jacobsen.

McMahan was arrested July 24 after Jacobson died in a Phoenix hospital from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The shooting happened July 17.

Jacobsen was able to call for help after he was shot. He told police dispatchers that he met the man on the internet and had invited him to his home for a drink. During an interview in the hospital, Jacobsen told police he had gone to the refrigerator to get a beer for McMahan. He said when he looked up, McMahan was holding a silver handgun and told Jacobsen he was going to be robbed, police said.

McMahan threw some silver duct tape at Jacobsen and told him to start taping his wrist, officers said. Jacobsen, fearing that he would be shot and killed, stood up and was shot, according to police.

Police were able to enter the home through a garage access door and found the victim bleeding with duct tape wrapped around his right wrist. Detectives determined that he had been shot in the kitchen.

McMahan has a criminal history stretching back more than a decade.

He pleaded guilty to armed robbery Nov. 30, 2001, and to charges in connection with a kidnapping Jan. 11, 2002. Aggravated assault charges were dismissed against him in August of 2009.

Jacobsen was the coach of Phoenix College's football team for the last five years. He coached football for 35 years.
