PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 51-year-old Phoenix man faces murder and assault charges after police said he stabbed his roommate during a fight early Sunday.

Gregory Bell allegedly struck his live-in girlfriend twice on the forehead with a closed fist, according to court paperwork.

Bell's roommate stepped in, a fight broke out and the victim suffered a fatal stab wound, police said.

Bell's girlfriend tried to administer CPR until rescue crews arrived, officers said. The victim was transported to the hospital where he later died.

The victim's name is being withheld until family members are notified.

Bell was arrested as he was leaving the residence.
