PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -
Several Arizona teachers could miss the first day of class because of background check backlogs.
The Department of Public Safety fingerprinting squad has 12,000 applicants still waiting for approval, which is affecting teachers and daycare workers who need these cards in order to work with children.
DPS is doing what it can to get the applications processed quickly. The fingerprinting office will be staffed 24 hours a day and extra help is being brought in to clear the backlog.
