PHOENIX (CBS5) -
The off-duty Tolleson police officer involved in a shooting at his house during a break-in June 5 has been identified along with a 17-year-old suspect who was shot in the head.
Off-duty Tolleson police officer Brian Gize was at home sleeping when he heard glass breaking down stairs. Gize grabbed a handgun and went downstairs to investigate.
Gize said he found Kalil Nathaniel Cole, 17, in his house. Gize said that Cole was wearing gloves and was armed with a rock.
Gize said he yelled at Cole to stop and asked what was he doing. Cole refused to listen and instead reacted as if he were going to throw the rock, Gize said. So Gize fired, hitting Cole in the head.
Gize called 911 to report the break-in and shooting. Gize told the 911 operator that he was an off-duty officer for Tolleson and that he put his handgun on a card table.
Officers said they saw Gize applying pressure to Cole's head wound. Cole was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. He is expected to survive.
Gize was not injured.
