PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Salt River Project delivered a record amount of energy to its Phoenix-area retail customers during a day of record-breaking heat Wednesday.
An SRP official said the peak demand of 6,665 megawatts between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday topped the previous all-time mark of 6,590 megawatts on July 21, 2006. Tuesday's demand of 6,437 megawatts was the previous high for this summer.
SRP said several factors contributed to the usage, including a record-high temperature of 116 degrees and a record high overnight low of 93 degrees.
Officials said the recently completed units at the Coolidge Generating Station as well as SRP's wind and solar renewable-energy facilities helped local generating units meet the record customer demand.
SRP serves nearly 950,000 customers in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.
