PHOENIX (AP) -

A federal appeals court has sided with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to throw out major parts of Arizona's tough crackdown on illegal immigrants.

A two-page ruling Wednesday by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals backed the high court's June 25 ruling on Arizona's SB1070 law.

The Supreme Court struck down provisions requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers, making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

But the justices let stand the portion requiring police to check the status of someone they suspect is not in the United States legally.

The 9th Circuit said the matter now is remanded to the district court in Arizona.
