PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Temperatures in the Phoenix metro area and western Arizona aren't expected to drop this week.

The National Weather Service has extended an excessive heat warning into Friday evening.

Afternoon high temperatures will be at or above 110 degrees, approaching record levels. Overnight temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-80s.

Forecasters are advising people in areas including Kingman, Phoenix, Yuma, Lake Havasu City, Gila Bend and Parker to stay indoors, drink plenty of water and wear loose, light clothing.

They say prolonged exposure to temperatures of at least 110 degrees can lead to heat stress or heat stroke.

Tuesday's high temperature reached a record-tying 112 degrees.

The high temperatures have also spurred an Ozone High Pollution Advisory for Wednesday in the Valley.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality issued the HPA because ozone levels are already to the mid to upper part of the moderate category, and light-wind circulation flows from the east and northeast Tuesday are expected to lock ozone in the Valley.

Highest concentrations are expected in the central and west parts of the Valley.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality recommends the following tips.

  • Avoid waiting in long drive-thru lines
  • Unplug unused appliances
  • Fuel your vehicle after dark or during cooler evening hours
  • Connect your outdoor lights to a timer or use solar lighting
