SURPRISE, AZ (CBS5) -
Police in Surprise have arrested two people in a shooting that killed one person and severely injured another.
Surprise police said they arrested 28-year-old Stephanie Conley and 28-year-old Jesse Gillen.
The shooting was called out about 1 a.m. Monday near Greenway and Grand in Surprise.
When police arrived, they found two men inside on the floor and a firearm and two knives.
One of the suspects died and the homeowner, who was shot once and stabbed several times, was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.
"This is not a random act," Surprise Police Sgt. Mike Donovan said. "This was specifically directed towards this residence, so no one's in immediate danger at this point."
Surprise police said the homeowner is a certified medical marijuana provider. They also confirmed marijuana plants were grown at the home. They said three suspects forced their way into the home to commit a robbery by stealing marijuana.
"We are concerned that that type of environment might create, you know, other criminal activity, so we are doing some internal research to see if we have any of those other acts of violence, type of things at these other dispensaries throughout our city," Donovan said.
At least one gunshot was fired that struck the victim, and then the confrontation became a knife fight, police said.
Both Conley and Gillen have prior arrests for marijuana and weapon charges. They are being booked for aggravated assault, armed robbery, burglary and murder.
