PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Valley rescue personnel were called to five separate drowning calls Saturday.
One of those calls shook up Bis Hartfield, even though the child he pulled from the pool survived.
Hartfield had invited his son's ex-girlfriend to come over for a swim, and in one split second her 3-year-old son wound up in the pool.
"I ducked under the water to cool off, came back up and she shouted, 'Dad, dad,'" Hartfield said.
Hartfield reacted quickly.
"I saw him going down," Hartfield said.
"The toddler was being supervised," said Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Larry Nunuz. "The toddler took a couple of steps away from the parent and basically submerged himself into the water."
The incident ended with Hartfield grabbing the child and performing CPR until it was clear he was fine.
Across the Phoenix area, there were three other near drownings - one in Peoria, one in Tempe and another in Phoenix.
At Lake Pleasant, a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office dive team was called out to a report of a drowning. MCSO spokesman Chris Hegstrom said the 28-year-old had been out on the lake with friends.
Family members identified the man as Cuauhtemoc Garcia Delgado.
The man swam out about 100 yards to the middle of the lake and went under, Hegstrom said. Family members said he was at the lake with his wife and kids when he noticed their raft going farther out and drowned when he went to get it.
Alcohol may have been a factor, Hegstrom said. The man's body was recovered just before 11 p.m.
Family members said Delgado was a wonderful soul who is survived by his mother, wife, 5-year-old daughter, 10-year-old son and has a baby girl on the way. They have set up a memorial fund with Wells Fargo bank called "The Garcia Family Donation" with account number 6301690217.
Rescue personnel said Saturday's calls underscore the need for extreme caution as the summer heat draws more people to our pools and waterways.
Last year, the Phoenix Fire Department responded to 86 calls, and 12 of them turned out to be fatalities.
This year, they've responded to 47 calls so far, and six have been drownings.
