PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A teen locked up at the Fourth Avenue Jail said deputies beat him and used a Taser on him. Jail officials said they have proof he's lying and now he's being charged with false reporting.
On July 19, Kolton Clark was picked up after a fight at his apartment complex where he was pepper sprayed.
Officials said he refused treatment. So they followed protocol, stripping the inmate down and putting him in a padded cell. Video released by the jail showed nobody in that cell with him for nine hours.
Kolton's stepmother, Kimberly Clark, said she believes more happened than what's being seen.
"He remembers some trap being opened and them telling him to shut up. They sprayed him with mace and then they used a Taser on him," Kimberly Clark said.
Kolton Clark's parents showed CBS 5 pictures claiming a mark on his back was from a Taser. Other images showed bruises on his face.
MCSO officials claimed those injuries were from the fight he got into before going to jail. Officials said they have recordings of phone conversations to prove it.
"The original phone call is 'I got beat up by my neighbor. Then the security guard pepper sprayed me.' Later on, it's 'I got beat up by the detention guys here,'" said Sgt. Brandon Jones with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
MCSO officials claimed he changed his story in hopes of getting a payout.
During a phone conversation Kolton Clark had with his biological mother while he was behind bars the two talked about the amount of money a lawsuit could potentially bring.
Clark's stepmother said it's all been taken out of context.
"She did tell me that she said you can get paid for this and he said he just wants justice," Kimberly Clark said.
On July 31, Kolton Clark was charged with false reporting.
