PHOENIX (CBS5) -
New details have been released on a man who stole a dump truck and then led police on a wild ride through city streets.
The suspect was shot and killed outside an east Valley convenience store.
Police shot and killed 51-year-old Ronald Chante in Apache Junction on June 17.
Witnesses called 911 to report that someone had stolen a dump truck in Phoenix and then took off, driving recklessly through Tempe, Mesa and Apache Junction.
According to police reports, Chante intentionally swerved the truck at police and fire personnel.
Another witness said the man drove into oncoming traffic, made a U-turn and nearly hit pedestrians.
In one of the calls a witness said, "This guy is trying to kill somebody. Now he passed me going the wrong way on the freeway."
The chase went on for about two hours, then came to an end at the convenience store where Chante reportedly smashed into an Apache Junction police car.
Seconds later, a SWAT team member opened fire, killing Chante.
CBS 5 News learned that Chante had an extensive criminal history and was accused of making threats against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
