School performance reports released

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The grades are in and we now know how Arizona schools scored with the state's new grading system.

Twenty-five percent of Arizona schools have moved up at least one letter grade.

The biggest shift came from schools that were given a "D" last year.

Forty-one percent of those schools did better this year.

High school students were given a new standardized test.

"So this is an estimate but it is likely a very good estimate as the percentage of our students that would pass that test and be declared college and career ready," explained Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal.

There were some negative results in the report.

Only 26 percent of high school students passed the reading portion, only 8 percent passed math and only 7 percent passed both.

Officials said it's a stark wake-up call for the need to improve education across Arizona especially for low income and minority students.
