The letter from a man in Portland, OR.
Tom Arriola
PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Tom Arriola has gotten a lot of crazy letters over the years, but nothing compared to a recent letter from a man in Portland, OR.
The man wrote about a cold case murder in 1956.
The man claimed that when he was living in the East Valley as a child, his dad shot and killed a police officer and the murder was never solved.
"There's just so much specific detail and the person that described the incident not only described what they saw, they described where they were, how they were standing and how they felt," said Arriola, who owns the website www.crimescene.com. "All the little details. Even the scream the officer made."
Arriola immediately contacted police.
CBS 5 News did some digging and found a listing of all the law enforcement officers killed in Arizona in the past 100 years.
There was an officer killed in 1955 and 1957, but no listing of anyone in 1956 like the letter stated.
Arriola still think it's worth looking in to.
"The more eyeballs that can look at a problem, the more likely someone solves the problem," Arriola said.
A spokesperson with the Chandler Police Department said that a detective was assigned to this case, but no evidence was ever found to indicate an officer was murdered.
They do encourage the public to continue to provide leads and tips on any crime with the hope that unsolved cases will eventually be solved.
