PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -
Police have identified the man who died after a shootout with Surprise police officers serving a Drug Enforcement Administration search warrant at a central Phoenix home.
Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department said the man killed was 24-year-old Hector Lara.
Surprise police Sgt. Michael Donovan said Lara died early Thursday morning after he fired at officers as they entered the home.
A DEA spokeswoman said Surprise police were serving the warrant on behalf of the DEA near 26th Place and McDowell Road.
Donovan said officers forced their way through the front door after knocking and receiving no response.
Donovan said the man was shot as he fled out the back door and after first firing at an officer.
"When I ran out to see, you know, what happened, that's when the gunfire was like, 'pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow.' It happened so fast, I guess they didn't know I was standing there watching it," Audrey Patterson, a witness, told CBS 5 News on Thursday.
Crump said several law enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation.
Glendale police acknowledged its officers were assisting the DEA, too.
Another man was taken into custody. Donovan said authorities believe both men lived at the home.
