Record number of Pima County early ballots mailed

TUCSON, AZ (AP) -

The Pima County Recorder's Office is mailing out a record number of early ballots for the Aug. 28 primary election.

Recorder F. Ann Rodriguez' office sent out 216,600 early ballots Thursday to voters in Pima County.

The Arizona Daily Star says that broke the previous record for early ballots in a primary election, set in August 2010 when 158,817 mail-in ballots went out.

Voting by early ballots increased steadily during the early to mid-2000s.

Then in 2008, Arizona created a permanent list of voters who automatically receive early ballots.

In the June 12 Congressional District 8 special election, 76 percent of the votes cast in Pima County were early ballots. It was the eighth consecutive general election cycle in which the percentage of early ballots increased in the county.
