Swimmers return to Slide Rock after temporary ban

SEDONA, AZ (AP) -

Swimmers returned to Slide Rock State Park on Wednesday after tests showed a low risk for water-based activity.

Water samples taken earlier this week revealed high levels of fecal coliform bacteria. But by Wednesday, park officials said the risk had decreased.

The popular area in Oak Creek Canyon has a history of water quality problems during the summer months. That's largely due to improper trash disposal and human waste.

The two-day swimming ban that went into effect Monday was the first of the season but likely not the last.

The amount of E.coli in Oak Creek has reached 500 times what the state says is acceptable in the past.
