TUCSON, AZ (AP) -
The Air Force has released a plan that would increase training flights at its Davis-Monthan base.
A draft assessment released Tuesday found that the boost would not significantly impact the surrounding environment.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that the conclusion means a more in-depth environmental impact statement isn't needed.
The preferred plan is to increase the annual number of sorties from 1,190 to 2,256 with some louder planes. Two other alternatives would scale back sorties and the types of planes. A no-action alternative also is included.
Comments on the plan are due Sept. 14.
The training has taken place since the 1970s. It once served as part-time winter flying practice for Air Guard pilots from northern states. It now runs year-round with warplanes and pilots from other branches of service and allied nations.
