Public input sought on Supreme Court applicants

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

A state judicial nominating commission is seeking written comments from the public on nine applicants to fill a vacancy on the Arizona Supreme Court.

The vacancy was created when Andrew Hurwitz recently stepped down from the state high court to accept an appointment to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Commission on Appellate Court Appointments will recommend at least three finalists to Gov. Jan Brewer, who will appoint Hurwitz's replacement.

The applicants include a half-dozen current Court of Appeals judges, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Douglas Rayes, federal prosecutor Christina Cabanillas and Kent Cattani, the state's top death penalty attorney.

Comments on the applicants are to be sent by regular mail and email by Aug. 16.
